On the date you were born
Fireworks lit the sky
And again every year
As your birthday rolled by
And I guess they’ll continue
In future years, too
And wherever I am
I’ll be thinking of you
I thank God to have known you
From when you were quite small
And cheered too loudly for you
When you pitched in baseball
To have sung you to sleep
And then held you a while
As you snuggled up to me
Sweet Godbaby Kyle
To have just been around you
When you flashed that bright smile
And raised bushy eyebrows
My dear Godson Kyle
I’m sure there’ll be fireworks
Come next Fourth of July
And I’ll feel you there with me
So I’ll smile as I cry
Remembering the gift
We received on that day
And so many good times
Before you went away
Though I’m empty and sad
I’ll rebound in a while
Knowing now, more than ever
You’re “God’s own boy,” Kyle
And there’s one more thing
That I’m certain is true
Every year there’ll be fireworks
In remembrance of you
